Cannon Street is a City of London station integrating District and Circle line Underground services with the Cannon Street National Rail terminus above. The mainline station serves as a major commuter gateway for south-east London and Kent — Southeastern trains run to Sevenoaks, Chatham, Gravesend and other destinations, making Cannon Street one of the City's busiest commuter arrival points on weekday mornings. At weekends, both the mainline and the surrounding City streets are dramatically quieter.
The station sits in the southern edge of the financial district, a few minutes walk from Bank junction and adjacent to the Roman remains of London Stone — a small piece of ancient limestone that may be a Roman milestone or foundation stone, now set into the wall of a building near the station. Borough Market and London Bridge are approximately 10 minutes walk across London Bridge, making the combination of City financial district and south bank food market a natural pairing.
Cannon Street District and Circle line station opened in 1884. It serves Zone 1 and is not step-free. The National Rail station above provides Southeastern services to south-east London and Kent. The Underground station is generally open, but the mainline station above operates primarily for weekday commuter traffic.
The District line (green) and Circle line (yellow) both stop here. Eastbound trains run toward Monument, Tower Hill and the District line's eastern branches. Westbound trains run toward Mansion House, Blackfriars and Temple. Journey to Monument is approximately 1 minute; to Blackfriars approximately 2 minutes.
Cannon Street has shops and an information point. The surrounding City streets have cafes and sandwich shops primarily serving the weekday workforce.
Cannon Street is not step-free. Blackfriars (step-free on District and Circle) is two stops west.
