Kilburn is a Jubilee line station in Zone 2 serving one of north London's most energetic and unpretentious high streets. Kilburn High Road runs north from the station through a neighbourhood with a large Irish community that has been established here for generations, alongside substantial West African, South Asian and Latin American communities that have arrived more recently. The result is a high street that is busy, functional and genuinely diverse - a contrast to the more curated, expensive neighbourhoods immediately to the south and east.
The Kiln Theatre, on Kilburn High Road just north of the station, is one of London's most respected fringe theatres. Previously known as the Tricycle Theatre, it has a strong track record for politically engaged new writing and international theatre that engages with the lives of communities around it. Tickets are substantially cheaper than equivalent West End shows and the programming is often more adventurous. The theatre also has a cinema and bar.
Kilburn's pubs tend toward the traditional rather than the craft-beer-and-small-plates style that has taken over much of inner north London. This is not a criticism - many are excellent, lively and characterful Irish pubs where conversation and Guinness are the main activities rather than Instagram-friendly interiors.
Kilburn station opened in 1979 when the Jubilee line extension reached this section. It serves Zone 2 on the Jubilee line only and is not step-free. Note that Kilburn Park station - on the Bakerloo line - is a separate station nearby, not to be confused with Kilburn.
The Jubilee line (silver) connects south toward West Hampstead, Finchley Road and Baker Street (approximately 10 minutes). Northbound trains run toward Willesden Green, Neasden, Wembley Park and Stanmore.
Kilburn station has shops and cafes. Kilburn High Road immediately outside has a full range of supermarkets, restaurants, takeaways and the Kiln Theatre.
Kilburn is not step-free. West Hampstead (one stop south, also not step-free) or Baker Street (step-free, several stops south) are the nearest accessible alternatives on the Jubilee line.
