Poplar is one of the original DLR stations from 1987, sitting at the intersection of multiple DLR routes in the heart of the former East End docklands. This is where trains branch towards Stratford, Bank, Beckton and Lewisham, making it a genuinely important interchange point on the network even if relatively few passengers start or end their journey here.
Poplar opened on 31 August 1987 as part of the inaugural DLR network. It sits in Zone 2 and is the branching point for several DLR routes -northbound trains divide here between the Stratford branch and the Bank branch, while eastbound services continue towards Beckton or Woolwich. The elevated station gives good views over the surrounding Docklands area.
Poplar is served by the DLR on multiple branches. From here you can reach Canary Wharf in 4 minutes, Bank in 8 minutes, Stratford in 8 minutes, Beckton in 15 minutes, and Woolwich Arsenal in 20 minutes. The station is a key junction -always check the destination board as trains divide here.
Poplar has full step-free access throughout -all DLR stations were designed to be accessible from the outset. Facilities are limited to standard ticket machines and validators; the nearest shops and cafes are a short walk in any direction into the surrounding residential and commercial streets.
All Saints' Church Poplar -Historic 18th-century church, a short walk from the station.
Canary Wharf -4 minutes on the DLR, with shopping, restaurants and the Jubilee line interchange.
