Swiss Cottage is a Jubilee line station in north London sitting between St John's Wood to the south and Hampstead to the north. The neighbourhood takes its name from a coaching inn built in the 1800s in the style of a Swiss chalet - the inn is long gone but the name persisted, giving this corner of NW3 a distinctive identity among London's many interchangeable zone 2 suburbs.
The area around the station has two cultural anchors that make it genuinely worth visiting rather than merely passing through. Hampstead Theatre, on Eton Avenue just minutes from the exit, is one of London's most respected producing theatres. It has a strong track record for world premieres of new plays and tends toward serious, adult drama rather than entertainment-led programming. The theatre has a small studio space alongside the main house, and tickets are considerably more affordable than equivalent West End shows. Swiss Cottage Leisure Centre, directly opposite the station, has a 33-metre pool, gym and fitness facilities open to the public.
The residential streets of South Hampstead and Belsize Park extend east and north from the station - wide avenues of large Victorian and Edwardian houses that have remained expensive and well-maintained. The Finchley Road, running past the station, connects south toward St John's Wood and Baker Street, or north into the Hampstead area. Hampstead village and the Heath are about 20 minutes walk uphill from the station.
Swiss Cottage opened in 1939 and serves Zone 2 on the Jubilee line only. The station is not step-free. It was designed as part of the extension of the then-Bakerloo line through north London.
The Jubilee line (silver) connects south toward St John's Wood (2 minutes), Baker Street (5 minutes) and Bond Street. Northbound trains run toward Finchley Road, Wembley Park and Stanmore. Journey to Bond Street takes approximately 7 minutes.
Swiss Cottage has shops, cafes and an information point. The Finchley Road outside has a full range of supermarkets, cafes and restaurants within a short walk.
Swiss Cottage is not step-free. St John's Wood (one stop south) has lifts and step-free access on the Jubilee line.
Hampstead Theatre - 5 minutes walk. One of London's leading producing theatres, known for world premieres of new plays. Affordable tickets compared to West End equivalents.
Swiss Cottage Leisure Centre - Directly opposite the station. Public pool (33 metres), gym and fitness facilities open to non-members on a pay-as-you-go basis.
Hampstead Heath - 20 minutes walk north (uphill). 800 acres of ancient open land, swimming ponds and the Parliament Hill viewpoint.
Swiss Cottage is primarily a commuter station with rush hours at 08:00-09:30 and 17:30-19:30. Theatre evenings add some passenger volume on weekday and weekend evenings. The Jubilee line runs from approximately 05:30 to midnight.
