Walthamstow Central is the north-eastern terminus of the Victoria line and one of east London's most complete town centre stations. The station opens directly onto Walthamstow town centre, which has undergone a genuine transformation over the past decade - from a largely anonymous outer east London suburb into one of the more sought-after community destinations in the city. The combination of good transport connections, Walthamstow Market and the William Morris Gallery has made this part of Walthamstow a genuine cultural draw.
Walthamstow Market is one of the first things you notice leaving the station. Europe's longest outdoor street market stretches nearly a mile along the High Street from Tuesday to Saturday, with fresh produce, clothing, household goods, street food and a general atmosphere of genuine local commerce. It is a working market for the community rather than a curated experience, and its length and variety are impressive.
The William Morris Gallery, 15 minutes walk north through Lloyd Park, is the principal museum dedicated to one of Victorian England's most influential designers and thinkers. Morris was born in Walthamstow in 1834, and the gallery occupies his childhood home. The collection of his textiles, wallpapers, stained glass and decorative work is outstanding, and the permanent exhibition is free.
Walthamstow Central opened in 1968 as the Victoria line's north-eastern terminus. It sits in Zone 3 and serves both the Victoria line and the London Overground. The station is step-free with lifts to the Victoria line platforms.
The Victoria line (light blue) connects south to Blackhorse Road, Tottenham Hale, Seven Sisters, Finsbury Park and central London. Journey to King's Cross is approximately 20 minutes. All Victoria line trains reverse here.
The London Overground connects south toward Wood Street, Highams Park and Liverpool Street (approximately 30 minutes).
Walthamstow Central has toilets, ATMs, Wi-Fi, shops and cafes within and adjacent to the station. Walthamstow Market and the town centre provide comprehensive food and retail options.
Step-free with lifts to Victoria line platforms throughout.
