King Khalid Airport to Riyadh City Centre by Metro — Step by Step

Take the Yellow Line metro from King Khalid International Airport to Riyadh city centre for just SAR 4. Step-by-step guide with timings, transfers, and tips.

King Khalid Airport to Riyadh City Centre by Metro — Step by Step

Getting from King Khalid International Airport to Riyadh city centre by metro is one of the easiest airport transfers in the region. The Yellow Line runs directly from all three terminal station groups into the heart of the city, with no changes required to reach the King Abdullah Financial District — and onward to Olaya, the National Museum, and historic Al Batha with a single transfer at KAFD.

The fare is SAR 4 for a standard 2-hour pass, which covers the full journey including any transfers. That compares to SAR 50 to SAR 100 or more for a taxi, with none of the uncertainty around traffic, surge pricing, or waiting at the rank. Trains run every 3 to 7 minutes during the day, so you rarely wait more than a few minutes after clearing arrivals.

This guide walks you through the journey step by step: which station serves your terminal, how to pay, what to expect on board, and which stops matter most once you reach the city. It also covers the return trip and tips for getting the timing right around your flight.

Why take the metro from King Khalid Airport?

The metro removes the two biggest unknowns in any airport transfer: cost and time. A standard Darb card 2-hour pass costs SAR 4, while taxis from KKIA to central Riyadh typically run SAR 50 to SAR 100 or more, depending on destination and time of day. The saving is significant, especially if you are travelling regularly or on a longer stay.

The Yellow Line runs on a dedicated track with no road congestion. Rush hour traffic on the major Riyadh arterials can add 30 to 60 minutes to a taxi journey, particularly between 7am and 9am and again from 4pm to 7pm. The metro is unaffected by all of it. You board, sit in a fully air-conditioned carriage, and arrive at your stop on schedule.

The line also runs early and late. Metro services begin at 06:00 and run until midnight Sunday through Thursday, and until 02:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. That window covers the vast majority of KKIA departure and arrival slots without any need for expensive late-night transfers.

Step by step: airport to city centre

Follow these steps from the moment you clear arrivals:

1. After collecting your bags and clearing customs, follow the yellow M signs for Metro inside the terminal building. Signage is in Arabic and English throughout and is well maintained.

2. Identify your terminal group before you walk to the platform. There are three separate station entrances at KKIA — Airport T1-2 for Terminals 1 and 2, Airport T3-4 for Terminals 3 and 4, and Airport T5 for Terminal 5. Each has its own station entrance connected to the arrivals level.

3. At the Ticket Vending Machine, buy a Darb card (SAR 10 card deposit, then add SAR 4 for a 2-hour pass) or pay with the Darb app QR ticket on your phone. If you have Apple Pay or Mada Pay configured on your device, you can tap directly at the gate — no card or app setup needed.

4. Tap through the turnstile gate and follow signs for the Yellow Line (Line 4) heading towards KAFD. All three airport stations sit on the same Yellow Line, so the direction is the same regardless of which terminal group you are departing from.

5. Board the train and ride to KAFD station. The journey takes approximately 35 to 45 minutes from the T1-2 terminus, slightly less from T3-4 and T5 which are closer to the city. KAFD is clearly announced and displayed on the in-carriage screens.

6. At KAFD, you have two options. If your destination is in the financial district itself, exit here — the KAFD skywalk connects directly to the major towers, hotels, and the conference centre without going street-level. If you are heading further south into the city, transfer to the Blue Line (Line 1) heading southbound. The transfer is inside the station and is free within your 2-hour pass window.

Which terminal are you in?

King Khalid International Airport has five terminals served by three metro stations, all on the Yellow Line. Knowing which station serves your terminal before you land saves time in arrivals.

  • Terminals 1 and 2: use Airport T1-2 station. This is the northern terminus of the Yellow Line and the furthest from the city, giving a journey time of approximately 35 to 45 minutes to KAFD.
  • Terminals 3 and 4: use Airport T3-4 station. These terminals handle domestic Saudi routes and some Gulf regional flights. Journey time to KAFD is slightly shorter than from T1-2.
  • Terminal 5: use Airport T5 station. Terminal 5 is the newest terminal at KKIA. It is one stop from T3-4 on the Yellow Line heading towards the city.

All three stations are on the same Yellow Line and all trains run in the same direction towards KAFD. If you are unsure which terminal your airline uses, check your boarding pass or the airline's website — KKIA publishes a terminal guide on its official site.

Key stops after KAFD on the Blue Line

Once you transfer to the Blue Line at KAFD heading southbound, these are the most useful stops for visitors and business travellers:

  • STC Al Olaya: the Olaya Street commercial district, Kingdom Tower, and Al Faisaliah Tower are all within easy walking distance. This is the most central stop for most business hotels and the main shopping corridor.
  • National Museum: direct access to the National Museum of Saudi Arabia and the nearby Murabba Palace. Useful for visitors and for the Al Murabba district in general.
  • Qasr Al Hokm: the historical core of Riyadh, Al Masmak Fortress, and the old commercial streets of central Riyadh. A key stop for anyone visiting the historic city.
  • Al Bat'ha: the traditional market district with budget hotels, exchange shops, and the dense commercial streets of old Batha. Popular with domestic travellers and longer-stay visitors looking for lower-cost accommodation.

All of these stops are within approximately 10 to 20 minutes of KAFD on the Blue Line. The full Blue Line journey from KAFD to the southern end of the line runs roughly 25 minutes.

Tips for first-time riders

A few things worth knowing before you board for the first time:

  • Buy your Darb card at the airport station on arrival rather than waiting until a city station. Airport machines are typically quieter than machines at busy central stations like STC Al Olaya or KAFD during peak hours.
  • The Yellow Line is signposted in both English and Arabic throughout the KKIA arrivals areas. Look for the yellow M symbol — it is consistent across all three terminal buildings.
  • Family cabins and First Class cabins are available on Yellow Line trains. Both are clearly marked with floor markings on the platform indicating where each carriage stops. First Class requires a First Class Darb pass purchased at the TVM.
  • Eating, drinking, and chewing gum are prohibited on all Riyadh Metro trains and platforms. Finish anything you have from the airport before you enter the paid zone — fines apply.
  • Train frequency is every 3 to 7 minutes during daytime hours. You do not need to rush through arrivals. If you miss one train, the next is rarely more than a few minutes away.

Return trip: city centre to King Khalid Airport

The return journey is simply the reverse: take the Blue Line northbound to KAFD, transfer to the Yellow Line, and ride to the terminal station that serves your departing terminal. The transfer at KAFD is in the same station building and is free within your 2-hour pass window.

Allow at least 60 minutes from the moment you leave your city centre station to the point of clearing airport security. KKIA is efficient, but check-in queues and security can extend during busy morning departures and holiday periods. Add a 15-minute buffer if you are travelling between 7am and 9am or between 4pm and 7pm, when metro platforms at central stations are busier and boarding can take slightly longer.

If you are travelling with large luggage, be aware that Yellow Line trains have overhead racks and end-of-carriage luggage spaces but no dedicated baggage car. Suitcases are permitted. Try to board at a less crowded door or wait for the next train if the first is very full during peak hours.
