About Amersham

Amersham station is the end of the line on the Metropolitan line's Amersham branch, and one of the most rewarding destinations on the entire Underground network for those who enjoy proper countryside, historic market towns and good food. Amersham is in Zone 9, over forty kilometres from Baker Street, in the Chiltern Hills in Buckinghamshire. The modern town on the hill around the station is functional but unremarkable. Old Amersham, a ten-minute walk downhill, is a different matter entirely: a perfectly preserved Georgian market town with a broad high street lined with 17th and 18th-century buildings, excellent independent restaurants and pubs, and the River Misbourne running through the southern edge. The surrounding Chiltern Hills are among the finest walking countryside in southern England.

Station Overview

Amersham station opened in 1892. It sits in Zone 9 and is the terminus of the Metropolitan line's Amersham branch. The station does not have step-free access but has a car park and shops. Chiltern Railways also serves Amersham on services between Marylebone and Aylesbury, providing an alternative route to London.

Lines and Connectivity

The Metropolitan line (magenta) runs south-east from Amersham towards Chalfont and Latimer, Chorleywood, Rickmansworth, Harrow-on-the-Hill and Baker Street. Journey time to Baker Street is approximately fifty minutes on the Metropolitan line; Chiltern Railways is typically faster to Marylebone.

Facilities

Amersham station has a car park, shops, cafes and a travel information point. Old Amersham's High Street, ten minutes walk downhill, has excellent independent restaurants, traditional pubs and good quality cafes.

Accessibility

Travel Tips

  • Old Amersham is the main draw - walk downhill from the station (about ten minutes, mostly downhill) to reach the Georgian High Street. The walk back is fifteen minutes uphill.
  • The Chiltern Hills AONB surrounds Amersham with excellent walking. The Chiltern Way long-distance route passes through the area.
  • Several good restaurants on Old Amersham High Street make this a worthwhile day trip from London with a proper lunch.
  • Chiltern Railways is typically faster than the Metropolitan line for reaching London Marylebone from Amersham - compare times on the TfL journey planner.
  • Zone 9 fares are the highest on the network. Check whether a day travelcard or Oyster gives the best value for your trip.
