About Angel

Angel station has a distinction that most passengers discover while gripping the handrail with slightly more urgency than usual: the escalators here are the longest on the entire London Underground network. At 60 metres in length, they descend at an angle that makes the bottom of the shaft look impressively far away. The escalators have been a source of local pride and mild anxiety since they were installed in 1992 as part of the station's reconstruction, replacing the original lifts. Once you reach the surface, the contrast is complete -Angel is one of the more pleasant Zone 1 stations to emerge from, opening onto the busy junction at the bottom of Upper Street in the heart of Islington.

Upper Street, running north from the station, is one of London's better restaurant streets -a long commercial thoroughfare with over 100 restaurants, bars and cafes of every type and price point. Camden Passage, a narrow alley just east of the station, is an antique and vintage market that is one of the more atmospheric shopping experiences in north London. And Sadler's Wells, London's premier dance theatre, is 10 minutes walk north on Rosebery Avenue.

Station Overview

Angel station opened in 1901 as part of the City and South London Railway. It sits in Zone 1 and is served exclusively by the Northern line. The station was reconstructed between 1990 and 1992, when the famous long escalators were installed. Step-free access is available.

Lines and Connectivity

Angel is served only by the Northern line on the Bank branch. Going south, the line reaches Old Street (2 minutes), Moorgate (4 minutes), Bank (6 minutes) and London Bridge (8 minutes). Going north, King's Cross (4 minutes) is the nearest major interchange, giving access to six Underground lines and National Rail.

Upper Street

Upper Street runs for approximately 1 kilometre north from Angel station to Highbury Corner. It is consistently considered one of London's best restaurant streets -the density of independently owned restaurants is higher than most comparable London streets, and the range covers Japanese, French, Italian, Indian, Middle Eastern, Vietnamese and many other cuisines at competitive prices. The street is busiest Friday and Saturday evenings; weekday lunchtimes are significantly calmer and often have better value set menus.

Camden Passage

Camden Passage is a pedestrian alley running parallel to Upper Street, east of the station. On Wednesdays and Saturdays it hosts an antique and vintage market -jewellery, silver, vintage clothing and curios -that has been a north London institution since the 1960s. The surrounding shops in the passage sell antiques, vintage clothing, independent design and specialist books throughout the week. Prices vary widely; haggling is accepted on market days.

Facilities

Angel station has a small shop and TfL Wi-Fi. The surrounding Upper Street has abundant ATMs, cafes and all necessary services. The station itself has step-free access via lifts in addition to the famous escalators.

Accessibility

Angel has step-free access on the Northern line via lifts. Passengers who prefer not to use the long escalators can use the lifts. Upper Street is broadly accessible at street level.

Travel Tips

  • The escalators are long -60 metres -but move at a standard speed. If you are in a hurry, the right side is for standing, the left for walking (as on all London Underground escalators).
  • Camden Passage market runs on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Wednesday is generally considered better for serious antique buyers; Saturday is busier and more atmospheric.
  • Sadler's Wells (10 minutes walk north on Rosebery Avenue) is the UK's leading dance theatre -ballet, contemporary dance, flamenco and physical theatre feature regularly. Book well in advance for major productions.
  • The restaurants on Upper Street between the station and Islington Green are generally the best -further north the quality becomes more variable. The parallel Essex Road to the east has more independent and lower-key options.
  • Exmouth Market, accessible from Angel via a 10-minute walk south-east toward Clerkenwell, is an excellent and relatively affordable alternative to Upper Street for lunch.
