Epping is the end of the line. Standing on the platform at Epping station, an hour from the City of London on the Central line, you are in a genuine Essex market town with an independent high street, a weekly market and immediate access to Epping Forest on all sides. The station is also the starting point of the Epping Ongar Railway, a heritage steam line that runs through restored stations to Ongar on Sundays, following a route that was originally part of the Central line before being closed and sold. The combination of a real market town, ancient forest and steam railway makes Epping one of the most rewarding day trips you can make on the Underground.
The station opened in 1865 as part of the Great Eastern Railway and was absorbed into TfL's Central line network in 1949. The large car park reflects its role as a park-and-ride terminus for commuters from across Essex.
