Green Park occupies a particular position in central London's geography -it is the quietest of the Royal Parks, the closest Underground station to Buckingham Palace, and one of the most important interchanges on the network. Three lines converge here: the Jubilee, Piccadilly and Victoria. From this single station you can reach Heathrow Airport (via Piccadilly), London Bridge and Canary Wharf (via Jubilee), and every major stop on the Victoria line's north-south spine. It is a station that makes connections easier.
The park itself -formal lawns of mature plane trees, no flowerbeds or ornamental planting, a deliberate simplicity -runs between Buckingham Palace and Piccadilly. It is a place where London's civil servants, park joggers, tourists and office workers all share the same grass without much ceremony. From the station's Piccadilly exit, The Ritz is visible across the road. From the Constitution Hill exit, the Queen Victoria Memorial and the eastern facade of Buckingham Palace are a 10-minute walk through the park.
Green Park station opened in 1906 as part of the Great Northern, Piccadilly and Brompton Railway. It sits in Zone 1 and serves three lines: the Jubilee, Piccadilly and Victoria. The station was rebuilt in the 1970s when the Jubilee line platforms were added, and it now has three separate platform levels within a single ticket hall complex. The station has step-free access on all three lines.
The Victoria line (light blue) is the fastest line for most central London journeys from Green Park. Oxford Circus is 2 minutes north. Victoria station is 2 minutes south. King's Cross is 7 minutes north.
The Piccadilly line (dark blue) connects Green Park to Heathrow Airport westward -approximately 45 minutes to Terminals 2 & 3 -and to King's Cross (7 minutes east) and Cockfosters in the north-east. For Heathrow, Green Park on the Piccadilly line is one of the most central starting points on the line.
The Jubilee line (silver) connects Green Park to Westminster (3 minutes east), London Bridge (8 minutes), Canary Wharf (15 minutes) and Waterloo (5 minutes west). Going north-west, the Jubilee serves Baker Street (8 minutes) and beyond to Stanmore.
Buckingham Palace is a 10-minute walk from Green Park station via the park or Constitution Hill. The palace's eastern facade and the Queen Victoria Memorial can be viewed freely from the road at any time. The State Rooms are open to the public in summer (August-October) with advance booking. The Palace Garden is open for selected tours in summer as well. The Changing of the Guard ceremony, when it takes place, is typically held at 11:00 on selected days -check the official palace website as the schedule varies.
Green Park station has toilets, TfL Wi-Fi, an information point and a small retail unit. The surrounding Mayfair and St James's neighbourhood is one of London's wealthiest -full of excellent restaurants and cafes but at corresponding prices. The park itself has cafes at the Buckingham Gate end. For more affordable options, walk 5 minutes north to Piccadilly Street or east into St James's.
Green Park has step-free access on all three lines via lifts from street level to each platform. This is one of the fully accessible central London interchanges and is recommended for passengers with mobility requirements who need connections between the three lines.
