About Tooting Broadway

Tooting Broadway is one of the Northern line's hidden gems -a station that places you at the centre of one of south London's most culturally diverse and genuinely vibrant high streets, far enough from Zone 1 to have kept its independent character but well-served enough to be worth making the journey. Tooting's population includes large South Asian, Sri Lankan, East African and Caribbean communities who have built a food scene that is among the most varied and affordable in London. The main high street is a long, energetic stretch of shops, restaurants, cafes and market stalls operating at a pace that feels lived-in rather than curated.

Tooting Market and Tooting Broadway Market sit adjacent to each other under their respective roofs -two of London's most interesting indoor markets, crammed with independent food stalls, cafes and traders selling everything from saris to vinyl records. The food in particular is exceptional value. Sri Lankan hoppers, West African suya, Indian street food, Caribbean roti, Colombian empanadas -the variety reflects Tooting's population and the markets function as the neighbourhood's living room as much as its shopping destination.

A short walk south brings you to Tooting Bec Lido, one of the UK's largest outdoor swimming pools at 91 metres long. Opened in 1906 and painted in a different colour on each of its surrounding changing-room cubicle doors, the lido operates from May to September and is beloved by south Londoners. On a warm June morning, it is one of the better places to be in the city. Tooting Common -a large open space with woodland and sports facilities -surrounds the lido.
