About Tower Hill

Tower Hill station is one of those London Underground stops where the gap between what is underground and what is above it produces a genuine sense of historic vertigo. You descend below the modern city, travel a few minutes on the Circle or District line, and emerge into the shadow of a medieval fortress that has been standing since 1078. The Tower of London is 2 minutes walk from the station exit. Tower Bridge is 5 minutes. And underfoot, in the gardens of Trinity Square, are sections of Roman London's city wall -the Londinium wall that defined the city's boundaries for 300 years from the 3rd century AD.

Tower Hill is not the most convenient station on the Underground in terms of line connections -only the Circle and District lines serve it. But it is one of the best-placed stations for a day of historic sightseeing, and the area rewards slow, curious exploration in a way that many busier tourist destinations do not.

Station Overview

Tower Hill station opened in 1882, replacing an earlier Tower of London station on the same line. It sits in Zone 1 and serves the Circle and District lines. The station has a single main entrance facing the Tower moat on Tower Hill, with exits onto both Tower Hill and Minories. Step-free access is available.

Lines and Connectivity

The District line (green) connects Tower Hill west to Monument/Cannon Street and ultimately to Victoria, Earl's Court, Richmond and Wimbledon. East, the District line serves Whitechapel, Stepney Green and onward to Barking and Upminster. For the City of London, Monument and Bank are 2-3 minutes west.

The Circle line (yellow) follows the same route here and continues around the full Circle loop north to Liverpool Street (5 minutes west), Moorgate, King's Cross and Paddington.

For additional connections, Aldgate station (Metropolitan and Circle lines) is a 5-minute walk north, and Shadwell DLR is accessible for Canary Wharf and east London connections.

The Tower of London

The Tower of London is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most visited attractions in Britain. Founded by William the Conqueror in 1078, it has served as a royal palace, a prison, an armoury and a place of execution. Today it houses the Crown Jewels -Britain's ceremonial regalia -in a purpose-built exhibition. The Beefeater (Yeoman Warder) guided tours are free with admission and extremely informative. Book tickets online to avoid the substantial queues at the entrance gate.

Tower Bridge

Tower Bridge -the Victorian Gothic opening bridge completed in 1894 -is a 5-minute walk east from the station along the riverfront path. The bridge itself is free to cross (it is a public road). The Tower Bridge Exhibition, which gives access to the high-level walkways (with glass floors) and the Victorian engine rooms below, requires a ticket and should be booked online. The view from the high-level walkways is one of the best of the Thames, east and west.

The Roman City Wall

Trinity Square Gardens, immediately north of Tower Hill station, contains a substantial section of London's Roman city wall -the Londinium wall built around 200 AD in Kentish ragstone. This is one of the most significant and accessible pieces of Roman archaeology in London and is free to see at any time. The medieval additions and post-medieval repairs to the wall are visible in the different stone types. A small statue of Emperor Trajan stands guard nearby.

Facilities

Tower Hill station has toilets, a newsagent and TfL Wi-Fi. The surrounding area has a good selection of cafes and food stalls -particularly along the riverfront near HMS Belfast and on the streets north toward Aldgate. The All Hallows by the Tower church (a minute's walk from the station) has a crypt museum and a good cafe.

Accessibility

Tower Hill has step-free access on the Circle and District lines. Lifts connect street level to the platform level. The surrounding area is largely accessible at street level, though the cobbled pathways near the Tower of London can be uneven.

Travel Tips

  • Book Tower of London tickets online -queues at the gate can be very long, particularly in summer and at half-term. Morning arrival (09:00-10:00) gives the best experience of the Crown Jewels before the crowds build.
  • The Beefeater (Yeoman Warder) tours are free with admission and depart from the main gate throughout the day. They last approximately 60 minutes and are genuinely entertaining.
  • All Hallows by the Tower, a church immediately beside the station, has a Saxon arch in its crypt that predates the Tower of London. Free to enter; the crypt museum is small but fascinating.
  • HMS Belfast -the decommissioned Royal Navy cruiser moored on the Thames -is a 10-minute walk east via Tower Bridge. Managed by the Imperial War Museum; admission charged. Free for IWM members.
  • The Thames Path heading west from Tower Bridge gives an excellent 20-minute walk to Borough Market and London Bridge through one of the most historic stretches of riverfront in the city.
