Wanstead station serves one of east London's more underrated residential villages. Wanstead High Street, a short walk from the station, has an excellent concentration of independent restaurants, cafes and specialist food shops that give the area a quality of local life often associated with more fashionable parts of west London. The demographic is prosperous and community-focused - Wanstead has consistently high ratings as a place to live among the outer London suburbs. Wanstead Park, part of the Epping Forest complex, is a short walk from the station and contains a series of ornamental lakes created in the 18th century when the former Wanstead House estate was at its height.
Wanstead station opened in 1947 as part of the Central line extension into Essex. It sits in Zone 4 and is served by the Central line only. The station does not have step-free access. It is between Redbridge to the east and Snaresbrook to the west.
The Central line (red) connects west towards Redbridge, Snaresbrook and into central London. Eastbound, the line heads towards the Hainault loop junction at Woodford via Roding Valley. Journey time to Liverpool Street is approximately twenty-five minutes.
Wanstead station has shops and a travel information point. The High Street, a short walk from the station, has a wide range of excellent independent cafes, restaurants and food shops.
Wanstead does not have step-free access. The nearest step-free Central line stations are in the central London direction towards Stratford.
Wanstead High Street - ten minutes walk. An excellent independent restaurant and cafe street that is one of the best in east London for neighbourhood dining.
Wanstead Park - fifteen minutes walk. Ornamental lakes and mature woodland in a former pleasure ground setting, part of Epping Forest. Free.
Wanstead Flats - accessible from the area. Open grassland on the edge of Epping Forest, popular with dog walkers and joggers. Free.
Central line services at Wanstead run from approximately 05:30 to midnight Monday to Saturday and 07:00 to 23:30 on Sundays. Night Tube operates on the Central line on Friday and Saturday nights. The High Street restaurants are busiest on Friday and Saturday evenings.
