Buckhurst Hill station sits on the edge of Epping Forest in Essex, within reasonable cycling or walking distance of some of the forest's most accessible paths and open glades. The station serves a prosperous suburb that retained its village feel long after the Central line arrived in the 1940s - the surrounding streets of large Victorian and Edwardian houses are well maintained, and Queen's Road nearby has a good independent shopping street with cafes, delis and local restaurants. It is the kind of suburb where people feel they got slightly lucky with the house they found.
The station first opened in 1856 as a Great Eastern Railway station and was incorporated into the Central line when TfL extended east into Essex in the late 1940s. The existing station building reflects that post-war expansion.
