Highbury & Islington

Highbury & Islington is a genuinely useful interchange in north London, connecting the Victoria line with the London Overground's East London line -a combination that allows orbital travel across the city without passing through the crowded central stations. The Victoria line gives fast access south to King's Cross (4 minutes), Euston and the West End. The Overground gives east-west connections through Dalston, Hackney, Whitechapel and westward to Clapham Junction and Richmond. For anyone making cross-London journeys that don't need to touch the centre, Highbury & Islington is the right interchange.

The station is also the closest Underground stop to Emirates Stadium -Arsenal FC's 60,000-capacity home -which is a 7-minute walk east through residential streets. On match days, the station sees significant additional traffic. The surrounding Islington neighbourhood has an excellent restaurant and bar scene on Upper Street and the area around Highbury Corner, and Highbury Fields park -29 acres of open space immediately east -is one of north London's better urban parks.

Station Overview

Highbury & Islington station opened in 1904. It sits in Zone 2 and serves the Victoria line and London Overground. Step-free access is available on the Victoria line. The station has multiple exits -the main entrance is on Holloway Road/Highbury Corner, with the Overground platforms slightly separate within the same complex.

Lines and Connectivity

The Victoria line (light blue) runs south to King's Cross (4 minutes), Euston (6 minutes), Oxford Circus (10 minutes) and Victoria (14 minutes). North, it serves Finsbury Park (2 minutes), Seven Sisters, Tottenham Hale and Walthamstow Central. The Victoria line's frequency here -trains every 3-4 minutes at peak -is one of its key advantages.

The Overground East London line connects north toward Dalston Junction (4 minutes), Canonbury and Highbury (within the borough loop), and south through Whitechapel, New Cross, Crystal Palace and Clapham Junction. This line is particularly useful for south-east London journeys without going via central London.
