New Cross station is an Overground stop in south-east London serving a neighbourhood that has had a strong arts, music and countercultural presence for several decades, shaped significantly by the proximity of Goldsmiths University. The area around New Cross Road has live music venues, independent pubs and a community character that has attracted artists, musicians and students to an area that is relatively affordable by Zone 2 standards. New Cross station opened in 1839 as part of the London and Croydon Railway. It sits in Zone 2 and is served by the London Overground. The station does not have step-free access. It is distinct from New Cross Gate station, which is about 500 metres to the east and also on the Overground.
The London Overground connects north through Brockley and Honor Oak Park towards Crystal Palace, and southbound towards Clapham Junction. The Overground also connects through New Cross Gate (adjacent) to Dalston Junction and Highbury and Islington northbound.
New Cross station has shops and a travel information point. New Cross Road has local cafes, restaurants, pubs and convenience stores within a short walk.
New Cross does not have step-free access. The nearest accessible options on the Overground are at Brockley or further south.
Goldsmiths University - ten minutes walk. One of London's leading arts universities. The Goldsmiths Centre for Contemporary Art is open to the public and hosts rotating exhibitions.
New Cross Road - immediately outside. Independent pubs, cafes and live music venues reflecting the area's arts and student culture.
Lewisham - accessible via Overground. The major south-east London DLR and National Rail hub with a shopping centre and market.
Overground services at New Cross run from approximately 05:30 to midnight on weekdays and similar hours on weekends. There is no Night Overground at New Cross. The area is most active on weekday afternoons and evenings when the student population is around.
