South Woodford is one of the more comfortable suburban Central line stations, sitting at the top of a lively local shopping street that gives the neighbourhood a genuine town centre feel. George Lane, which runs close to the station, has the mix of independent shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs that makes a suburb feel like somewhere people actually choose to live rather than simply commute from. It is a popular residential area in the London Borough of Redbridge, with good access to Epping Forest and a car park at the station that makes it a practical park-and-ride option for commuters from Essex.
The station itself has a long history, having first opened in 1856 as part of the Eastern Counties and Thames Junction Railway, long before the Central line took it over. The Victorian station structure has been substantially rebuilt over the decades, though the area's pleasant suburban character has been preserved.
