About Becontree

Becontree station sits in the middle of one of the largest council housing estates in the world. The Becontree estate, built by the London County Council between 1921 and 1935 to rehouse working-class Londoners from overcrowded inner-city slums, covers about 2,700 acres and at its peak housed around 100,000 people. It was designed to be a self-contained community with its own shops, churches, schools and parks, and many of the original 1920s and 1930s houses survive in recognisable form along the estate's wide streets. For students of social history, 20th-century urban planning and working-class London history, Becontree is genuinely significant. Valence House Museum in nearby Dagenham explores the history of the estate and the borough.
